The
Lister Family-Navajo
Jewelers
David and Alice Lister are third generation Navajo Silversmiths.
They carry on the silver-working traditions with David making his
own stamp dies and Alice doing much of their lapidary work. Alice
and David were married in 1972 and have been making silver and
gold jewelry together since 1975. They have since passed on the
jewelry making tradition to 4 of their 7 daughters. “The
girls learned silversmithing when they were in high school” says
Alice, “I told them they either had to pick up trash outside
or work inside. They learned they could make money by making small
rings and pendants so they chose to work inside.”
Alice and David’s daughter Dee Nez works alongside her parents,
living across the street. Dee started making jewelry in high school
to make money and is a very successful artist. Her jewelry tends
to be very colorful. She enjoys using orange and purple spiny oyster
shell, turquoise and green gaspiite. Many of her shapes resemble
flowers, crosses or clusters.
Clarissa and Vernon Hale, another of David and Alice’s daughters
work full time but spend their weekends with the family making
jewelry. They do very nice stamped jewelry and also use excellent
turquoise and other stones. |
