Danny Lanza Bahniptewa-KACHINA CARVER

Danny Lanza Bahnimptewa was born July 13th, 1964. He is the son of Agnes and Clifford Bahnimptewa. Cliff painted all of the Kachinas listed in Barton Wright’s book “Kachinas, A Hopi Artist’s documentary” and in Harold S. Colton’s book “Hopi Kachina Dolls. He was also a very successful Kachina carver. Cliff died in 1984.
Danny has been carving for about 12 years. He says that he has always had a talent for carving and was self-taught. He says that his best carvings were the Chasing Star Kachina, the White Bear and the Badger. Danny carves from one piece of wood. It is very important to him to carry on the Bahnimptewa name to keep his father’s name alive.
